Nestled on 10 acres of land on the Capricorn Coast lies a place for young people to call home. Carinity On Track is a welcoming refuge for 12 to 17-year-olds in the child safety system.

The 2025 Carinity Christmas Appeal will support such as Carinity services such as On Track, a safe home for young people in the child safety system.

Residential care supports young people who, through no fault of their own, are unable to live with their parents or in kinship care. It's often considered a last resort, when other arrangements such as foster care have been unsuccessful or are insufficient to meet their needs.

When a young person arrives at Carinity On Track they have usually suffered trauma. They may have been abused or neglected, or have parents who are incarcerated or battling addiction or mental health issues. They may also have complex needs that other forms of care are unable to meet.

Led by Program Coordinator, Sammie McLardy, Carinity On Track's team of on-site counsellors and youth workers provide a nurturing, structured, family-like environment.

"The children are usually grappling with behavioural issues triggered by their trauma and it's our mission and passion to guide them on how to express their emotions in more constructive ways," Sammie said.

"Central to this approach is ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also validated. Our goal is to create lasting positive memories for our young people, so they know there are people who truly care about them.

"Our team is there on special occasions, as well as every day and night in between, ensuring that every child feels valued and at home.

"We celebrate achievements and actively support hopes and dreams, fostering an environment where individuals can truly thrive."

Sammie said what she loves most about her role at Carinity On Track is witnessing the growth of young people who have faced and overcome significant challenges.

"The positive changes we see are immense, as individuals develop essential life skills, and become empowered to find their own solutions to the barriers they face," she said.

From daily routines, such as preparing for school and participating in cooking nights, to achieving milestones like reunifying with families or gaining independence, each success story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have.

"The camaraderie and laughter amongst us reflects a true sense of family. It's a privilege to help build brighter futures and I am proud to be part of such a talented and passionate team."
