Townsville City Council is extending its commitment to transforming Townsville into a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in recreational activities with the renewal of the Castle Hill Summit Track handrails from today (Monday 28 November).
Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the works followed on from the June opening of the Walker Street Castle Hill Connection, linking the Maidenhair Track to the Goat Track.
"The handrail renewal project is funded through the Queensland Government's Works for Queensland initiative and will include the periodic closure of walking tracks and Castle Hill Road for the safety of the community and workers on site while work is undertaken," Cr Rehbein said.
"The works will include handrail replacement and associated infrastructure to ensure the area continues to be safe for community use. Materials will be lifted into the worksite via helicopter.
"The first closure ran from 5am on today (Monday 28 November). Should weather interfere with the scheduled works, the lifts will occur on the next suitable day. Further closures are expected between now and February."
The works will also include machinery operating on the road and the air, and noise, flashing lights and dust.
Castle Hill has eight major tracks, ranging from 500m to 1.2km in length. Castle Hill makes up one of Townsville's nine major walking and cycling destinations.
