Cessnock City Council's popular Talking History walks return as part of the much-loved Talking History series this year, with the first - Exploring Greta - set for 10am on Saturday, 18 April.
Four guided walks, hosted by Cessnock Library's Local Studies Librarian Kimberly O'Sullivan, will take place during the coming months, inviting attendees to explore the rich tapestry of Cessnock local government area's past - from historic Greta to the tranquil hills of Ellalong.
Acting Library Services Co-Ordinator Andrew Powell said the walks give people the chance to step out of the pages of history and walk through the very places that have shaped their community.
"We're thrilled to see such enthusiasm for local heritage and look forward to bringing these hidden stories to life for a new generation of explorers," said Mr Powell.
The following walks have been scheduled:
- Exploring Greta (10am-12pm, Saturday 18 April, 2026) - Discover Greta's open-air cinema, historic hotels, and the secret garden that once enchanted locals. Concludes with a guided tour of Greta Museum.
- Exploring Aberdare (10am-12pm, Saturday 2 May, 2026) - Reflect on life and mortality while uncovering the personal stories buried within Aberdare's historic cemetery.
- Exploring Ellalong (10am-12pm, Saturday 13 June, 2026) - From cedar cutters and coal miners to today's Hunter Valley haven, hear how the mountains shaped Ellalong's evolution.
- Exploring Kurri Kurri (10am-12pm, Saturday 10 October, 2026) - Trace the town's 1904 settlement, its early newspaper, and the brief period it enjoyed its own council, all told on a walk through the heart of Kurri Kurri.
The events will be limited to groups of 15, offering an engaging and story-rich experience, so early bookings are strongly encouraged. All walks will be conducted at a relaxed pace. Tickets are $5 each and are available at www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/libraries/Whats-on
