The CFA-declared Fire Danger Period will commence at 1.00am on Monday, 10 January 2022. Baw Baw Shire residents and owners should ensure their property is well prepared and bushfire risk is minimised in anticipation of the upcoming fire season.
When the Fire Danger Period has been declared across the municipality, fire restrictions will come into force. During this period a written permit from the CFA is required to burn in the open air with some conditions in place.
Council's Fire Hazard Inspection Program is in place to ensure properties across the Shire do not pose a risk to community safety. The program, that is currently underway focuses on protecting homes and buildings by reducing fuel loads in line with CFA guidelines.
As part of its legal obligations, Council undertakes annual assessments throughout the Shire and where necessary, issues Fire Prevention Notices to properties deemed a fire risk. The notices direct property owners or occupiers to remove or clean up vegetation or other combustible materials on their land.
Reducing the vegetation from around the property is one of the most important things residents can do to minimise fire risk. Tidying leaves, twigs, bark and other undergrowth, and cutting long grass and weeds, should be the focus of any preparation and maintenance work to reduce fuel loads.
Residents can use their green waste bins or organise a drop off at one of Council's Transfer Stations. Additionally, residents can seek help from contractors to assist with maintaining their properties.
When travelling through the region this summer period, all visitors are reminded to take note of fire restrictions in force relating to campfires and barbeques.
