Championing disability inclusion

International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD), which is marked globally as 3 December, has been observed within Australia for over two decades, in which time much progress has been made for people living with disability. However, there are still many barriers within society faced by this section of the community, and IDPWD aims to remove these through striving for inclusivity through celebrating and supporting those with disability as well as educating the wider community.

The 2019 theme of IDPWD is ‘promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership’, which is exactly what the Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, with the support of The Barossa Council, are focussing on with their event Listen-Learn-Lead: Be a disability inclusion champion in your community.

On Monday 2 December from 10am until 2pm in the Co-op mall the Listen-Learn-Lead event will feature the opportunity for community to experience what it is like to use a wheelchair or to be visually impaired, to identify what they feel is working well and what needs improvement in regards to access and inclusion in the region, as well as enjoying an exhibition of work from local Tutti Arts artists with opportunity to speak directly with exhibiting artists.

“The event will be a great opportunity to celebrate some of the achievements of those in our community living with disability, particularly with the Tutti Arts exhibition, but also to further work on access and inclusion in the Barossa and wider community,” said Deb Anderson, Collaborative Project Officer at The Barossa Council.

Information about disability support in the region and about The Barossa Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will also be available on the day.
