Changing world through collaboration

Collaboration helps our research make a difference both close to home and further afield, something we celebrated at our recent Impact and Engagement awards.

Here, we look at the winners and the inspiring research they are leading.

Law leads the way

Research by Professor Clare McGlynn and colleagues has shaped new laws criminalising image-based sexual abuse – the taking or sharing private, sexual images without consent.

Clare has worked with politicians, policy makers and organisations including Rape Crisis and End Violence Against Women to strengthen current laws.

She continues to work with victims to increase awareness of the impact of image-based sexual abuse.

The power of art

Dr Alex Flynn's research is based on Cartonera, a global publishing movement that reuses cardboard from the streets to make books, helping communities address the challenges they face while also providing a basic living through cultural work.

Amongst other projects, Alex and the team worked with female prisoners in one of Mexico's largest prisons, Puente Grande Prison, to encourage them to tell their stories and turn these experiences into a book as part of their rehabilitation.

Spending scrutiny

Professor Laurence Ferry's research aims to ensure that public sector spending represents value for money through more stringent auditing.

Laurence's highly-acclaimed research led him to a prestigious parliamentary academic fellowship, only one of 18 in the country. The fellowship gave Laurence the opportunity to work with senior government officials to review how his research findings can be put into practice.

Rock solid data

Professor David Selby has developed a model to accurately determine the age of geological formations, such as rock, which is crucial for locating minerals including petroleum, copper and gold.

The model helps minimise the environmental impact of excavation by reducing the amount of drilling and informs more resourceful excavation for industry.

Award winners

Clare, Laurence, Alex and David were all recognised at our annual Impact and Engagement Awards. The awards celebrate research impact beyond academia and recognise research that is changing the way we live our lives.
