Check Your Catch Before You Get Caught

Police are reminding fishers to measure their catch as soon as it is out of the water, after 74 undersize fish were identified in Devonport on Tuesday night.

Inspector Anthea Maingay said police intercepted 12 people fishing at Victoria Bridge, and the undersize mullet were found during a catch inspection.

"When the catch was inspected, 74 fish were found to be undersize, and only 27 of those were able to be returned to the water as the others weren't viable," she said.

"People must check their catch for size to avoid depleting our fisheries."

"Taking undersize fish can attract a fine of $390 as well as attracting special penalties which can run into the thousands."

"If the offending is severe, you can also have your catch and fishing equipment seized, even your boat."

"If you're a fisher, download the Fishing Tas App, so you have all the relevant information handy."
