Christmas To Remember For Families Who Often Miss Out

Community members with high support needs and their families have had private 20-minute sessions with Santa over three days at the Wurriki Nyal civic precinct.

More than 100 people attended the 'Inclusive Santa' experience across 12-14 December. These families often miss out on traditional Christmas and Santa experiences because those events are generally not designed to meet diverse sensory, communication, medical or access needs.

Participants included children, young people and adults with physical disabilities, life-limiting or palliative conditions, complex medical needs, immunocompromised status, severe intellectual disability and mobility requirements that are often not met by mainstream venues and programs.

Those who use complex assistive technology and/or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including non-verbal and highly supported communication methods, also attended.

Each session featured tailored activities suited to the individual's needs, with Santa following their lead. Digital photos were provided afterwards.

This program was co-developed by the City of Greater Geelong, Sage Support Coordination and Jenna O'Brien Speech Pathology. Each organisation's expertise and community relationships significantly shaped the design and delivery of the 2025 experience.

All volunteers had AAC training to support communication accessibility and ensure every participant and family member felt heard.

Insights and feedback from a 2022 community pilot highlighted a strong need for inclusive, low-pressure Christmas activities that were open to the whole family.

These sessions at Wurriki Nyal have been very joyful for local families as it's rare for them to be involved in festive activities without barriers.

Every detail was designed to make families feel welcomed and supported, from AAC-trained volunteers to tailored sessions that follow each participant's lead.

Our Inclusive Santa experience has helped to reduce social isolation this Christmas.
