The City has expanded its Beach Access Program, installing three new beach wheelchair lockboxes across the Gold Coast to improve accessibility for residents and visitors.
Division 12 Councillor Nick Marshall said the new lockboxes at Miami, Paradise Point and Labrador build on the success of the two existing self-service facilities at Burleigh Beach.
"Since 2024, the City has invested more than $250,000 to install and maintain these lockboxes, supporting our goal of creating a city where everyone feels included," Cr Marshall said.
"The lockboxes at Burleigh have been extremely popular, with user satisfaction currently at 100 per cent.
"Each lockbox contains a free-to-borrow beach wheelchair, instruction manual and life vest and users can unlock it by scanning a QR code for quick and easy access."
Cr Marshall said beach wheelchairs are not only used by people with disability.
"They also support seniors, people with medical conditions, chronic illness or temporary injuries to enjoy our beautiful beaches and swimming enclosures," he said.
The lockboxes form part of the City's broader Beach Access Program, delivered in partnership with local surf clubs and community organisations.
Residents and visitors can borrow beach wheelchairs and use beach matting free of charge through program partners or the self-service lockboxes located across the city.
