City Hailed as Leader for Visionary Future Plan

The City's visionary Shaping Perth City Centre: Towards 2036 framework, developed with international urban strategy firm Gehl, was recognised at the 2025 Place Leaders Asia Pacific Awards.

Designed to guide the long-term transformation of Perth, the framework received a Commendation for "successfully uniting state agencies, landowners and the community around shared, objective priorities".

Judges described the framework as "a great example of civic stewardship, showing how sustained, data-driven place leadership can align diverse stakeholders and secure a resilient, inclusive future for a capital city."

Adopted by Council earlier this year, Towards 2036 builds on previous work with Gehl that helped transform the city through people-focused urban design and major projects, including Elizabeth Quay, Perth City Link and the ECU City Campus.

It incorporates climate adaptation, blue-green infrastructure and authentic Aboriginal narratives into place planning, alongside clear governance models and funding pathways.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the Commendation reflects years of work to shape Perth's future and would guide planning, investment and partnerships across the city centre, as well as the ongoing delivery of the Capital City Plan.

"This framework puts people at the heart of our city, prioritising great public spaces, more housing choice, thriving local businesses and vibrant cultural experiences that encourage people to explore the city and stay longer," he said.

"The recognition highlights the strength of our long-standing partnership with Gehl and our shared commitment to delivering a bold vision for Perth's future, and reinforces the importance of sustained, data-driven place leadership and strong civic stewardship for our capital city."

GEHL Managing Director Henriette Vamberg accepted the award on the City's behalf at a ceremony in Port Macquarie.

The City will officially launch the Towards 2036 Framework in June.
