City of Greater Bendigo to start search for new CEO

The City of Greater Bendigo is about to start its search for a new Chief Executive Officer.

The role will be advertised from tomorrow, Saturday August 12, and recruitment company Davidson has been appointed to assist Council in finding a new leader for the organisation.

Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said she expected the process to be highly competitive, a reflection of the City's reputation as a successful Local Government organisation.

"We are looking for an authentic leader, with a people focus. They will need to be a strategic thinker and have a track record in delivering timely outcomes. They will also have extensive experience in the government sector and have strong relationship building skills to work positively with Council, staff and key stakeholders," Cr Metcalf said.

"From an organisation perspective, a new CEO will need to guide planning for an expected population of about 200,000 people by 2050, drive advocacy efforts for major projects, ensure continued financial sustainability, support cultural diversity and inclusion within the community, champion a positive organisation culture, and maintain the City's role and reputation as a regional leader.

"Greater Bendigo has much to offer someone who might be looking to make a tree change, we've got a wonderful arts and culture offering, fantastic major events, beautiful natural surrounds, and great mix of schools, sporting organisations and recreation facilities all within easy reach.

"This is a demanding role but one that is also hugely rewarding. Council anticipates there will be great interest in this role locally and across the region, within the Local Government sector and by nature of the role being advertised online, may attract national or international interest.

"This will be one of the most critical decisions Councillors make this term and we look forward to receiving applications and working through this important process."

Applications will be open for approximately four weeks, with the aim of announcing the successful candidate by late October.

In June 2022, Council announced it had re-appointed current CEO Craig Niemann for a one-year term, effective from December 2022 to December 2023.

The decision was by mutual agreement between Mr Niemann and Council. Mr Niemann will depart the organisation this December after 16 years as CEO of the City and 40 years in the Local Government sector, and will seek new opportunities in 2024.
