The City of Perth and Main Roads Western Australia were finalists in the 2019 Australian Urban Design Awards 'Leadership, advocacy and research - city and regional scale' category for the newly designed Hay Street Pedestrian Priority Zone.
As Australia's premier awards for excellence and innovation in urban design, the 2019 Australian Urban Design Awards recognise contemporary Australian urban design of the highest quality.
Part of the City's East End Revitalisation Program, the Hay Street Pedestrian Priority Zone is a unique and innovative project between the City of Perth and Main Roads that challenges typical shared space schemes.
Both organisations worked seamlessly together to orchestrate the design, providing more space and amenity for people of all abilities without compromising the functionality of the street.
"This is a great example of the City and State working together to deliver improvements that will benefit local businesses, residents and visitors to the city," Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
"The PPZ will significantly contribute to improving the character of the area, providing more space and amenity for pedestrians.
"Key features of the precinct include reducing speed limits for vehicles to 20km/h, wide footpaths, upgraded lighting and greater opportunity for outdoor dining to encourage people to stay longer and activate the area."
The East End Revitalisation Program has already seen developments including the City of Perth Library and Cathedral Precinct, Westin and QT Hotels as well as work underway on the redevelopment of ANZAC House.
Overall, the City of Perth's East End Revitalisation Program aims to enhance the character and quality of the east end, introducing the benefits of two-way movement along Hay and Irwin Streets.
The first stage of the works on Hay Street is expected to commence in the first half of next year.
