A remembrance and reflection space will be created at Weeip Park in Midland to remember the life of Cassius Turvey, a local 15-year-old Noongar boy who died after being attacked on his way home from school in Swan View in October 2022.
At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on December 15 the City's Council passed a motion to create a space to remember Cassius and hold an unveiling for the community when it is completed.
The City's Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Group will collaborate with Cassius' mother, Mechelle Turvey and local Aboriginal Elders to prepare a range of options for consideration at a future Council meeting.
Mayor David Lucas said the City continued to support and assist the Turvey family in light of the recent tragedy.
"We have a strong community spirit here in the City of Swan and it has been inspiring to see everyone rally together to help the Turvey family," he said.
"The City assisted and supported Mechelle Turvey, her family and friends with the organisation of three memorial events since the alleged murder of Cassius Turvey, and in addition to the commemorative structure, has discussed options with Mrs Turvey to support youth programs in honour of the life of Cassius."
Councillor Cate McCullough, who put forward the motion, said it was important to commemorate the loss of an innocent young man in the spirit of reconciliation.
"A remembrance and reflection space will be a reminder of Cassius Turvey: an emerging, inspiring and gentle leader who even in his short life, has left a significant legacy in our communities, across our nation and the world," she said.
