Our beaches were shining a little brighter this week after locals rolled up their sleeves for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1 March.
In a joint effort, Bayside City Council, Hampton Beach Patrol, and our waste collection contractor Cleanaway hosted a community clean‑up across Brighton's foreshore and surrounding gardens, collecting the everyday litter that too often finds its way into our environment.
Volunteers gathered aluminium cans, glass bottles, textiles, dog‑walking accessories, and a variety of plastics, including bottle tops, wrappers, paper straws, cigarette butts, and takeaway packaging. One of the more unusual discoveries of the day was a collection of roof tiles.
While some litter had likely blown or washed in from neighbouring streets, other items had been carelessly dropped or intentionally discarded.
The clean‑up was a timely reminder of our shared responsibility to protect our beaches and surrounding areas. Whether it's towels, shoes, dog toys or food wrappers, if you bring it to the beach, make sure you take it home or dispose of it responsibly. Anything left behind becomes harmful litter.
Thank you to everyone who took part in Sunday's event, and to those who participated in Clean Up Australia Day activities throughout the week. Your efforts help keep Bayside beautiful.
