Climate change information empowers Pacific resilience

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Island nations are among the most vulnerable to climate change, with rising sea levels and an increase in severe maritime weather events.

For the Pacific region, risk management and adaptation planning are essential. While credible scientific information is available, it is not straightforward to apply this to inform decision-making.

To address this challenge, the CSIRO has developed a project called Next Generation Climate Projections for the Western Tropical Pacific.

By providing communities with the best available climate science, the project will empower 'climate-smart' decisions across the Pacific region.

The project will assist with:

  • integrated climate vulnerability assessments
  • fisheries and marine resource management
  • food systems modelling
  • plastics and other waste management
  • energy transition planning.

The Australian Government is working closely with Pacific nations at the UN Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai to ensure the delivery of practical benefits to the region.
