- Fremantle Ports launch $91.2 million clinker import circuit at Kwinana Bulk Terminal
- Clinker to diversify and maintain Western Australia's economic future
- Kwinana Bulk Terminal now home to WA's sole import location for clinker
- New circuit further supports the State's growth
The Cook Labor Government's vision for diversifying and maintaining Western Australia's nation-leading economy has been cemented with Fremantle Ports today officially launching a new State-funded $91.2 million clinker import circuit at the Kwinana Bulk Terminal.
The new system will improve operations, storage and environmental management, enabling faster, uninterrupted unloading of product.
Clinker is an essential component of cement which is foundational to most sectors of Western Australia including housing and major infrastructure projects.
The new clinker import circuit's conveyor system streamlines the import process with direct product transfer of cement clinker and granulated slag to Cockburn Cement via a dedicated conveyor.
The large dome used to store clinker for truck load out was the first of its kind to be constructed in WA and holds a complete clinker shipment of 40,000 tonnes, four times the previous import storage shed capacity.
The clinker circuit is the largest single capital investment made for Fremantle Ports since the Inner Harbour dredging more than a decade ago.
Last year, Fremantle Ports facilitated the import of one million tonnes of white and grey clinker - mainly from Indonesia, but also from Japan, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.
As stated by Premier and Kwinana MLA Roger Cook:
"As a local, I'm proud to see Kwinana become home to Western Australia's sole clinker import circuit.
"This cutting-edge facility is an example of how my government is strengthening our State's nation-leading economy and supporting future growth opportunities."
As stated by Ports Minister Stephen Dawson:
"As our population and economy grow, we experience growing demand for cement to build new houses and major infrastructure throughout the State.
"Clinker is the key ingredient to making cement, which is crucial in helping us deliver these projects.
"With the commissioning of this new clinker import circuit, the Cook Labor Government is honouring our commitment to invest in the foundations that will deliver industry and jobs to our communities now and into the future.
"Congratulations to Fremantle Ports on completion of this project, which will enhance operations, increase capacity and support industry across WA."
As stated by Fremantle Ports CEO Jodie Ransom:
"With our new system, we will improve our operational efficiency and dust suppression, enabling faster, uninterrupted unloading of product and in doing so, reducing port or berth congestion.
"The combination of a first-of-a-kind install and the high-risk work required to build the dome makes the project noteworthy and exceptional and a credit to all involved.
"It gives me great pride in my colleagues and the collective effort that has delivered this asset, and especially proud that it has been delivered with zero lost time injuries.
"The success of this project leads us forward with confidence as we look to the transformation of Fremantle Ports in the years ahead."
