An Economic Impact Assessment has been released to further inform buffel grass management in the Northern Territory.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is calling for a more coordinated national response and investment to support long-term management efforts.
The CLP Government continues action through a $750,000 annual commitment and delivering the Buffel Grass Weed Management Plan 2026-36.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government continues to take strong action to manage buffel grass, releasing an Economic Impact Assessment to help inform further pragmatic decision making on buffel grass management in the Northern Territory.
Prepared by Charles Darwin University, the report provides a Territory-wide analysis of the economic impacts of buffel grass and a more focused assessment of buffel grass around the Alice Springs area.
Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Joshua Burgoyne said the report demonstrates the CLP Government's commitment to managing buffel grass.
"Our government is doing its job by investing $750,000 annually into buffel grass management and delivering the Buffel Grass Weed Management Plan 2026-2036," Minister Burgoyne said.
"This plan highlights the need for further investment - which is why I have written to the Federal Government seeking additional investment from the Commonwealth to support buffel grass management across the Northern Territory."
The assessment examined current, active and proactive management approaches, finding that proactive management delivers the most cost-effective long-term outcomes.
"This report reinforces the need for the Federal Government and Alice Springs Town Council to work together with our Government to manage buffel grass into the future."
The assessment recognised the economic importance of existing buffel grass pastures, with grazing on these pastures remaining an important land use across many NT pastoral regions.
