Coalition Backs ACCC Soft Plastics Recycling Plan

Liberal Party Victoria

The Victorian Liberals and Nationals welcome the ACCC's proposal for a new voluntary, industry-led soft plastics recycling scheme.

Since the collapse of Victorian-based REDcycle almost three years ago, Victorians have been left without any practical way to recycle their soft plastics.

In 2022, the Victorian Labor Government promised a soft plastics recycling system.

That same year, the Albanese and Andrews Labor governments committed $3 million to IQ Renew for a large-scale Altona facility capable of processing 30,000 tonnes of soft plastics annually.

Three years on from both commitments, and no meaningful progress has been made.

Shadow Minister for Environment, Brad Rowswell, said: "The ACCC has paved the way for soft plastics recycling in Victoria, but the government has shown they are all talk and no action."

"Without proper investment in soft plastics recycling facilities, Victoria could contribute to creating another REDcycle disaster."

"If countries like Sweden and Germany have successful plastic management solutions, why are we so far behind in Victoria?"
