Community members are encouraged to take caution at Cobden lake where a possible blue green algae bloom is being investigated.
Corangamite Shire Council Manager Regulatory Services Andrew Nield said Wannon Water took samples today and results were expected by the end of the week.
"Council received a report regarding a possible blue green algae outbreak at Lake Cobden, including photos.
"Our Environmental Health Team contacted Wannon Water to undertake further investigation.
"If unsafe levels of blue green algae are confirmed, Council will notify the public if any restrictions are needed."
Blue-green algae can cause skin rashes and itchiness; irritation of the eyes, ears and nose; respiratory irritation; liver damage; and asthma-like symptoms.
Adjoining landowners and recreational users are advised to avoid all contact with the water and keep pets and livestock away until DEECA declares it safe.
