Common sense Wallarah 2 decision a welcome boost for jobs

The NSW Government's approval today of mining leases to allow the Wallarah 2 Coal Project to proceed is a common sense decision that will boost regional jobs and business opportunities.

CFMEU Mining and Energy Northern District President Peter Jordan said the Wyong mine had ticked all the regulatory boxes and demonstrated it would comply with the high standards required of NSW coal developments.

"Our industry needs fair rules that are consistently applied to give operators, investors and workers some certainty," said Mr Jordan.

"We welcome the NSW Government's decision today which recognises the rigorous assessment process the Wallarah 2 project has been through. The community has been waiting for a long time for the jobs that will flow from this project.

"As with any project, our focus will be on representing workers and making sure the project delivers permanent, secure jobs."

Wallarah 2 is an underground coal project approved to extract up to 5 million tonnes of export thermal coal per year.
