Commonwealth Ave to Close for Light Rail Works 14 April

Light Rail Stage 2A works are continuing on Commonwealth Avenue in April to extend Canberra's light rail network from the city to Commonwealth Park.

To ensure these critical works can be carried out safely, temporary road and lane closures will be in place along sections of Commonwealth Avenue.

The works have been scheduled to minimise the number of closures needed to support multiple construction activities taking place. Closures will mostly occur at night and on weekends where possible to reduce the impact on Canberra's traffic network. However, there is a closure on Commonwealth Avenue northbound during the weekday on Friday, 17 April.

Commonwealth Avenue traffic changes

8pm Thursday 16 April – 6am Saturday 18 April (weather permitting): Northbound lanes of Commonwealth Avenue between the Parkes Way on ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed.Entry into Albert Street East from Commonwealth Avenue southbound will be closed.

8pm Thursday 16 April – 5am Monday 20 April (weather permitting): Northbound lanes of Commonwealth Avenue between the Parkes Way on ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed. Detours will be in place. Southbound travel from Vernon Circle to Albert Street East will be reduced to one lane.

8pm Monday 27 April – 5am Tuesday 28 April (weather permitting): Northbound lanes of Commonwealth Avenue between the Parkes Way on ramp and Vernon Circle will be closed. Detours will be in place. Southbound travel from Vernon Circle to the Parkes Way on ramp will be reduced to one lane.

Additional closures will be required during the year to allow the work to proceed safely.

Plan ahead

These temporary changes will impact how people travel to and around the city. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, follow all detours and traffic control, and check live travel conditions before travelling.

The works also coincide with the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal project, delivered by the National Capital Authority, which has closed the northbound span of the bridge.
