Community Local Law

Yarra City Council

Our new Community Local Law 2026 has been gazetted following its adoption by Council at its meeting on 9 June 2026.

The Local Law will come into effect on 1 September 2026, replacing the existing General Local Law (Consolidated), which will be revoked on the same date.

The Community Local Law 2026 has been developed to support the peace, order and good governance of the municipality, while promoting a safe, accessible, inclusive and vibrant community. It aims to enhance amenity, protect public health and safety, support accessibility for people with disabilities, and contribute to a sustainable local economy.

The Local Law provides Council with a framework to manage, regulate and, where necessary, prohibit certain activities across the municipality. Its provisions relate to a range of matters affecting community life and the use of public spaces, including:

  • Looking after private property
  • Activities on Council land
  • Vehicles, roads and footpaths
  • Animals
  • Building works
  • Alcohol
  • Administration and enforcement
  • Permits
