Community to Celebrate New Changing Places Facility

East Gippsland Shire Council is inviting the community to celebrate the official opening of the new Changing Places facility in Lakes Entrance on Thursday 6 November.

The event will take place at the corner of Myer Street and the Esplanade, where the new facility provides accessible, private and secure changerooms and toilets for people with disabilities and high support needs, and their carers.

The design includes a height-adjustable adult-sized changing table, ceiling hoist, accessible shower, Braille and tactile signage, and space for carers - ensuring more people can enjoy Lakes Entrance's foreshore, shops and parks.

Mayor Cr John White said the project represents an important step towards making East Gippsland more accessible and inclusive.

"This facility opens up new opportunities for visitors and locals who've often missed out because the facilities just weren't there," Cr White said. "It's about giving everyone a fair go to get out and enjoy our community, no matter their needs."

The project was jointly funded by Council and the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) through the Changing Places Funding Round 2022. It is one of 19 such facilities being delivered across Victoria, including one under construction in Cann River, to improve access for all.

"We want Lakes Entrance to be a place where everyone can stay, enjoy and explore - whether you're popping down to the shops, enjoying the foreshore, or dining at the pub," Cr White said.

"This facility reflects our commitment to building communities that are welcoming, accessible and inclusive."

Council is keen to hear from people with disability about their needs and thoughts on Changing Places facilities, so we can continue to improve accessibility for everyone.

The official opening at 1.00 pm on Thursday 6 November will include short speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a community barbecue. Community members are encouraged to attend and celebrate this milestone.
