The University of Southampton, in partnership with the Aspire consortium, has received approval to move ahead with the redevelopment of its Wessex Lane halls of residence complex.
This exciting new development will boost student accommodation by up to 1,108 beds by redeveloping the old and new Connaught quads and refurbishing the Grade II* listed South Stoneham House.
The new state of the art facilities will create much-needed student accommodation in the city through the development of existing university-owned sites.
Professor Phillip Wright, Acting Vice President and Vice Chancellor, at the University of Southampton, said: "The redevelopment of Wessex Lane represents an opportunity to breathe life into a building of significant national and local interest.
"It will also provide benefits in terms of access and enhanced transport links for the local community and for future students.
"As a university, we take pride in being able to continually evolve our accommodation offer to meet future student demand.
"We thank our local community for their feedback and will continue to work with them as the scheme progresses."
Kevin Argent, the University's Executive Director of Estates and Facilities, added: "This development will enable the future growth of the university by providing high quality accommodation and wellbeing support on site for students.
"It will allow us to reinvigorate our existing site to provide modern facilities for our student community, whilst maintaining the infrastructure of our historic buildings.
"We look forward to breaking ground soon."
Building work is due to start in late 2026, enabling involvement and employment in the project for local people and businesses, with the facilities management subcontracted to Aspire Students Limited, once complete.
The Aspire consortium is the University of Southampton's student housing partner and securing planning permission marks the beginning of a 50-year programme dedicated to improving the student living experience.
The Aspire consortium partners have a proven history of collaborating on various accommodation and infrastructure projects, including the delivery of around 30,000 student beds across the UK.
