Connecting children to nature through play

Registrations for Council's award-winning nature activities program for children, Little Taccas, open on Monday 28 February.

The first Little Taccas program for 2022 starts at the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct on 10 March.

The nature play-based program aims to connect children five and under and their parents with nature while raising awareness of the region's natural areas and includes art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Started in March 2014 at the Cairns Botanic Gardens, the program has recorded over 2500 registrations from budding green thumbs.

Mayor Bob Manning said the program continued to be extremely popular and urged parents and carers to jump online Monday morning to secure a place for their children.

"Little Taccas is so popular each program is literally booked out within minutes," Cr Manning said.

"Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, children and their caregivers have the chance to explore our amazing natural backyard and gain an appreciation for nature and gardening."

Little Taccas is delivered as part of Council's Green Space Our Place volunteer program, and is made possible through the hard work of a dedicated crew of volunteers, under the direction of Council officers.

There are four Little Taccas programs scheduled throughout the year.

Bookings are essential and can be made on Council's website from 8.30am on Monday 28 February.
