Connecting consumers and farmers to strengthen the 'buy local, eat local' message is helping to drive the growth and diversity in Western Australia's food industry.
Today's Farmer on Your Plate event in Forrest Place provides an opportunity for city consumers to meet with WA farming families who are showcasing their produce - all cooked by local chefs.
The State Government's Buy West Eat Best program, a supporter of the event, has been pivotal in building consumer awareness over the past decade about the benefits of buying local.
Seasonality, freshness, province and quality are key criteria for consumers when shopping for food.
Over the past decade, the Buy West Eat Best message has broadened to not only encourage locals and visitors to buy local but also 'eat local' and sample the best food and beverages WA has on offer.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"Farmer on Your Plate, run by Farming Champions, is about bringing the farming community to the city, and fostering connections between the city and the country.
"WA has some of the best quality produce, which is in high demand across the globe.
"Those stopping by Forrest Place today will have the opportunity to sample an array of local produce including honey, yabbies, cheese, preserves, fruit, vegetables and speciality meats.
"Our farmers are innovative, resourceful and dedicated to delivering fresh, seasonal produce, while underpinning rural and regional communities around the State.
"The McGowan Government is committed to supporting our producers through a range of initiatives, from improving digital connectivity to highlighting regional WA as a food destination offering an array of culinary experiences."
