Construction Begins on 30 New Beds at Mount Druitt Hospital

NSW Gov

Construction has officially begun on 30 additional beds at Mount Druitt Hospital, marking a major milestone in the Minns Labor Government's commitment to increase bed capacity in one of the country's fastest growing regions.

The Mount Druitt Hospital project forms part of the Minns Labor Government's $120 million investment to deliver 60 additional beds across Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals, after the Liberals failed to build enough beds for these hospitals.

Mount Druitt Hospital currently provides 24-hour emergency care, paediatric, and palliative care services and plays a key role in planned surgery in Western Sydney.

The additional bed capacity will enable more people to be cared for closer to home and reduce the need for transfers from Mount Druitt Emergency Department to other Western Sydney hospitals.

The hospital's expansion will also provide a new inpatient unit, a relocated and expanded outpatient unit, expanded clinical and non-clinical support services and a new Aboriginal family room and additional parking.

Construction of the new inpatient unit is expected to be completed in late 2027.

These 30 additional beds form part of the Minns Labor Government's plan to address Western Sydney's infrastructure backlog, delivering the essential services growing communities need.

Work to deliver 30 additional beds at Blacktown Hospital is nearing completion, with the beds to be operational before the end of 2026, one year ahead of schedule.

In addition, construction of two new operating theatres at Blacktown Hospital is continuing and is expected to be completed in 2027. The new theatres will increase surgical capacity and will help to ease pressure on existing services.

The Liberals failed to deliver sufficient health infrastructure for Western Sydney:

  • Promising and failing to build Rouse Hill at three elections increasing pressure on Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals with more than 17,000 patients from Rouse Hill and surrounding suburbs estimated to present to Westmead or Blacktown hospitals each year - almost 50 each day;
  • Failing to build New Bankstown Hospital;
  • Failing to build enough beds for Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals; and
  • Failing to upgrade Canterbury Hospital.

The Minns Labor Government is investing $3.8 billion over the next four years in Western Sydney health infrastructure, including:

  • $2 billion for the new Bankstown Hospital;
  • $910 million for the new Rouse Hill Hospital, including a $120 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government;
  • $630 million for the Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment, including an $80 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government;
  • $400 million for the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment.
