Construction of new community facility to start

Wagga Wagga City Council will carry out works to construct a purpose-built community building next month.

Council's Associate Director Projects Silas Darby said the facility will be constructed at 26 Shaw Street Wagga Wagga, next to the Duke of Kent Oval.

"The Duke of Kent community building will be built on the former site of the Wagga Women's Bowling Club rooms," Mr Darby said.

"The site will be cleared to make way for the new facility which will accommodate the Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club, University of the Third Age members, and other community groups."

Council sold the Wagga Wagga Veteran & Vintage Motor Club building site at 205 Morgan Street at public auction late last year with a commitment to the tenants to find alternate accommodation.

"Alternate locations were considered with the investigations and user group discussions resulting in Council endorsing the construction of a new facility," Mr Darby said.

"Once completed, this new facility will offer meeting rooms, amenities, kitchen, and other components which are being finalised in ongoing discussions with user groups."

A number of parking bays at the entrance of Kent Crescent will be unavailable during construction.

Works will commence in September 2022 with the community building expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.

The $800,000 project is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council.
