Over the summer, Yale pathologists added a new tool to their toolbox.
The artificial intelligence (AI) platform assesses biopsy slides with a tool trained on information from a database of prostate biopsies. The new technology also enables the pathologists to compare features gleaned from a large database of whole slide images with the digitized slides they review in the lab, thereby performing a quality-control check.
AI is increasingly being used in the field of pathology - and has the potential to change how diseases are understood, diagnosed, and treated. For example, AI tools can improve the accuracy and efficiency of systems, standardize diagnoses, and uncover patterns not detectable by the human eye.
"The use of AI within pathology is very broad," said Sudhir Perincheri, an associate professor of pathology at Yale School of Medicine. "What's current now becomes very quickly outdated because of the speed with which the technology is moving."
