Construction Starts On Warradarge Wind Farm Stage 2

  • Construction of 30 additional wind turbines will take wind farm's capacity to 283 megawatts (MW)
  • Expanded wind farm to provide an extra 103MW of wind energy
  • More than 120 jobs to be created at peak of construction
  • Warradarge one of the top performing wind assets in Australia

Construction has started on a $400 million expansion of the Warradarge Wind Farm near Eneabba - continuing Western Australia's clean energy transition and delivering more renewable power for thousands of households and businesses.

An extra 30 wind turbines are being built in the second-stage expansion, adding to 51 turbines that have been producing reliable, renewable energy since 2020.

The 30 new wind turbines will be capable of providing 103 megawatts (MW) of wind energy. They will be the same size as the existing turbines, with a tip height of 152 metres and blades 67 metres long.

When completed, the expanded wind farm will provide up to 283 MW of power for the South West Interconnected System, making it the biggest wind farm in WA. It will also be the largest by energy generated, able to power about 164,000 households a year.

Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson toured the wind farm today, with earthworks underway in preparation for the installation of the extra turbines.

The expansion is due to be completed in 2027.

More than 120 jobs are expected to be created at the peak of construction.

Warradarge Wind Farm is owned by Bright Energy Investments (BEI), a joint venture between Government-owned Synergy and Potentia Energy. Synergy has contributed $28.8 million to the expansion.

Warradarge Wind Farm is one of the top-performing wind assets in Australia. It is among more than 9,800 MW of renewable energy, storage and gas projects that will provide the power required by 2029-30 to support the State's closure of coal-fired power stations.

As stated by Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"I am pleased to announce construction starting on this important wind energy project for WA.

"The expansion of Warradarge Wind Farm represents a significant increase and contribution to renewable power generation in WA.

"Our State has abundant wind resources, particularly in the Mid West region.

"This project along with other grid-scale wind and solar farms and big batteries will enable us to exit coal by 2030 - faster than any other State.

"Relying on coal-fired power generation no longer makes sense - economically or environmentally.

"Warradarge Stage 2 is not just about building a bigger wind farm - it's about building a better future for generations to come."

As stated by Bright Energy Investments General Manager Tom Frood:

"Warradarge Wind Farm is recognised as one of the best in the country and Stage 2 will consolidate this success.

"We will continue to work closely with the local community and stakeholders to ensure the project benefits everyone."
