Consultation Begins for Tasmanian Antarctic Strategy

Tasmanian Government

Consultation has opened on the future of Tasmania's Antarctic Gateway, inviting input to help shape the next phase of an industry that has a proud history and delivers a strong economic contribution in Tasmania.

Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said there is an opportunity for all Tasmanian businesses to participate and provide feedback on the strategy.

"Developing our world-leading Antarctic Gateway to deliver jobs, maritime services, trade and investment, science and research, and visitor opportunities, is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future," Minister Barnett said.

"Through the Tasmanian Antarctic Gateway Strategy 2022–2027, the Tasmanian Government continues to deliver its vision of Tasmania as a globally recognised hub of Antarctic capability and excellence.

"Tasmania's Antarctic and Southern Ocean sector already employs nearly 1,200 people and contributes more than $204 million to the Tasmanian economy each year.

"Ahead of 2027, the Government is commencing work to develop a new strategy that captures emerging opportunities and drives the next phase of growth for Tasmania's Antarctic Gateway.

"It's about facilitating opportunities for Tasmanian businesses and creating greater visibility of the sector across the Tasmanian community."

The Government wants to hear from individuals, businesses and organisations, including those outside the Antarctic and Southern Ocean sector, to ensure the new strategy reflects the full diversity of voices and opportunities.

"Broad community input will be invaluable for informing the long-term future of the Tasmanian Antarctic Gateway and we want to ensure as many views as possible are included."

Tasmanians are invited to have their say and submit their feedback via an online survey which will be available from 1 July to 2 August 2026.
