Water has been restored to the majority of Cairns, but residents should continue to conserve water while reserves build back to normal levels.
Mayor Terry James said Cairns was very close to losing water supply yesterday.
"Some of our treated storage was down to 3% yesterday however we are sitting around the 30% mark this morning," Cr James said.
"I'd like to thank the community for their efforts in conserving water over the last 48 hours. It has ensured that everyone in Cairns has had access to water to drink, prepare food, brush their teeth and have a shower."
While the situation has improved, Mayor Terry James emphasised the importance of continuing to conserve water in the days ahead.
"Though we have made progress, our reservoirs need time to fill up. It could be a week or more before we are back to normal.
"It is crucial that we remain vigilant about our water consumption to ensure a steady and sustainable water supply for everyone in Cairns."
Water has been restored to the majority of Machans Beach, Holloways Beach and Yorkeys Knob. Some residents may experience low pressure.
There are individual properties, or streets, that may not have water due to damaged water mains in those areas.
Bottled water is available at Marlin Coast Recreational Centre for residents who don't have water at their home.
