Continuing Tasmania's War On Weeds

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is continuing to strengthen weed control efforts with the roll out of Stage 3 of the Weeds Action Fund (WAF).

Stage 3 of the program will focus on six projects that cover priority weeds and key regions of the state, including established and emerging agricultural and environmental weeds.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said the effective management and removal of serious invasive weeds is essential to safeguarding Tasmania's unique natural values and enhancing the productivity of agricultural land.

"Landowners, government and the broader community have been working hand in hand for years to address eradication of high priority weeds in Tasmania," Minister Pearce said.

"Weeds know no borders, which is why a joint approach that supports shared responsibility has been so successful in achieving positive outcomes.

"Through previous rounds of the Weeds Action Fund, our Government has delivered $3.6 million to weed management projects and made significant improvements to local areas.

"The latest stage of the program is delivering an additional $1.2 million to target weeds across our state, including Chilean needle grass, serrated tussock, rice grass, Spanish heath, foxglove, ragwort, stemless thistle, orange hawkweed, red inkweed, willows and brooms.

"The projects will cover on the ground works, producing weed management plans and strategies, holding workshops and field days across the state, and developing educational materials including videos, brochures and identification guides."
