- ADCO engaged to progress construction works on youth detention facility
- Secure facility part of government's sweeping reforms of youth detention
The Cook Labor Government is progressing the next project phases of the $158.5 million new youth detention facility.
ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd has been engaged to undertake the early contractor involvement services and enabling works stage 2 on the new facility's site adjoining the Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale. ADCO will also work with the government to finalise design of the centre.
This project milestone follows completion of the early works stage 1, which included creation of lay-down areas, site clearing and construction of a new car park.
It comes amid the opening in April of Djin-Djinaby, a $29.1 million crisis care unit within Banksia Hill to provide mental health care for young people in detention.
The new detention facility will provide therapeutic support in a secure environment for the State's most high-risk young people. It is designed to replace the Unit 18 youth detention facility at Casuarina Prison that is being used for young people who cannot be safely housed at Banksia Hill.
As stated by Corrective Services Minister Paul Papalia:
"Securing a key contractor for this important project puts us another step closer to giving high-risk young people the structure, support and opportunities they need to turn their lives around.
"The Cook Labor Government has invested heavily in infrastructure and programs to reduce youth crime and make our communities safer."
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"This new facility is part of the Cook Labor Government's commitment to building safer, stronger communities.
"We're ensuring young people have access to the support and stability they need, while also creating jobs and supporting WA's construction sector."
