Racing in the Mid West has received a significant boost, with the Cook Labor Government investing more than $2 million to strengthen infrastructure, enhance safety, and support animal welfare at two regional racing clubs.

Geraldton Turf Club and Dongara Irwin Race Club have benefited from funding through the Cook Labor Government's $25.2 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund (RRIF), which is helping modernise racing facilities across regional Western Australia.

Geraldton Turf Club completed a major $1.163 million irrigation system project last September, helping to maintain safe and sustainable racing and training conditions. A further $40,000 was invested earlier this year to replace rubber flooring in the club's horse stalls, improving horse welfare outcomes.

Additional works including new starting barriers and enhancements to racing and training facilities are underway and scheduled for completion before the track's first race meeting of the season.

At Dongara Irwin Race Club, water system improvements and horse stall roofing works are progressing as part of a $92,000 funding package, supporting safer operations and improved animal welfare.

Together, the projects will help maintain high-quality racing facilities while improving conditions for horses, jockeys, and participants.

Regional racing continues to deliver significant economic and social benefits across the Mid West, contributing an estimated $37.6 million to the State economy each year.

The Mid West projects form part of a broader infrastructure program being delivered through the RRIF, with works underway at 24 thoroughbred and harness racing venues across regional Western Australia.

As stated by Racing and Gaming Minister Don Punch:

"The Cook Labor Government is committed to supporting regional racing clubs through targeted infrastructure investments that improve safety, animal welfare, and the racing experience for everyone involved.

"These projects are delivering important upgrades at Geraldton and Dongara, helping clubs maintain modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that meet the needs of the industry and their local communities.

"Regional racing generates significant economic and social benefits across Western Australia, and this investment will help ensure the Mid West remains a strong and vibrant racing region into the future."
