Cook Government supporting WA sheep farmers

  • Sheep producers encouraged to seek help during challenging season

The Cook Government is supporting Western Australian sheep farmers impacted by challenging seasonal and industry conditions through a range of free resources.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) Season 2023 webpages provide up-to-date information, advice and tools to support decision-making during this difficult time - from feed budgeting and nutrition to grazing options as well as land resource management.

DPIRD is undertaking an economic analysis to assist sheep producers in their decision making on topics, such as such as optimum flock size given price scenarios, priority animals to retain on farm and immediate decisions around feeding retained animals.

When completed, the information will be available on DPIRD's Season 2023 webpages.

There are also links to WA's rural support services, including 24/7 helplines and counselling services.

In addition, the Cook Government funds Rural West - afree, confidential, mobile,financial service for regional small businesses and primary production enterprises in WA.

The Cook Government also supports the Regional Men's Health Initiative, which raises awareness and provides a safe spaces for men to open up about their mental well-being.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"We know this is a difficult time for hard-working farmers across the nation, who are being affected by challenging climate and industry conditions.

"In Western Australia, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's (DPIRD) Regional Intelligence Group has been keeping me well informed about the seasonal developments and its impact on producers and the supply chain.

"I encourage WA sheep producers to reach out for help and to utilise the free financial and metal health resources available.

"The Season 2023 webpages provide a one-stop-shop for updated information, advice, tools and support to assist broadacre producers make informed decisions to navigate the season in coming months."
