Cook Government welcomes China's barley breakthrough

  • CBH Grain given green light to re-enter the Chinese barley market
  • China barley trade can re-commence immediately

The Cook Government welcomes the announcement by China to re-register Western Australia barley exporter CBH Grain, allowing trade to recommence immediately.

The announcement follows China's recent decision to remove the 80.5 per cent anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed on Australian barley in 2020.

Prior to the suspension, China was WA's largest market for barley exports, purchasing about half of the State's production, valued at $409 million per year.

The Cook Government will act quickly to work with grains organisations and industry to support the resumption of the Chinese barley trade, while continuing to support existing markets and diversification.

WA feed and malt barley is favoured by the Chinese market, particularly for its high- performance brewing characteristics.

Comments attributed to Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"The Chinese re-registration of CBH Grain to resume barley trade is great news for WA farmers.

"During the past three years the WA barley industry has not stood still, with plantings essentially maintained, and several new high-quality varieties released that will no doubt be of interest to Chinese buyers.

"I again congratulate the Federal Government in its successful efforts working with Chinese authorities to re-register our barley exporters.

"I look forward to seeing our barley industry continuing to grow and capture new market opportunities for our premium quality product."
