Cook Gov't Scores Win for Rockingham Families

  • Cook Labor Government commits $10 million towards rejuvenation of Mike Barnett Sports Complex in Rockingham
  • Works will include construction of additional courts and important upgrades
  • Part of the Cook Government's commitment to provide quality infrastructure and services to the community

The Cook Labor Government will invest $10 million towards upgrades at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex in Rockingham, delivering additional basketball and netball courts, and much needed maintenance works for the popular community facility.

As part of the project, the Cook Government will provide $2 million for the City of Rockingham to replace the existing roof and deliver other important upgrades to address poor ventilation for a number of courts.

A further $8 million has been allocated towards construction of new courts for a range of sports including basketball, netball, volleyball and others, plugging a much needed gap in the local community for indoor sporting facilities.

The upgrades will help meet the growing demand for courts in the wider Rockingham area and ensure that the existing complex remains fit for purpose.

Planning for the new courts will progress in partnership with the City of Rockingham and local sporting organisations, including the Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

"I am delighted that, through strong and disciplined financial management, my Government has been able to deliver $10 million towards the upgrade of the Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

"The Mike Barnett Sports Complex is a much-loved Rockingham community asset and this upgrade will ensure that local residents will enjoy the facilities for years to come.

"Only my Labor Government delivers on the issues that matter to our local communities."

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"It is no secret that basketball and netball are growing in popularity in Western Australia and the demand for courts is outstripping supply.

"Community sporting facilities are so important for local communities - they provide a place to socialise and relax.

"I am delighted that the Cook Government has recognised the need for these additional courts in Rockingham and look forward to seeing them being used by young and old alike once complete."
