Coronavirus update for Victoria 1 April 2022

There are 310 COVID-19 cases in hospital in Victoria - with 7 active cases in ICU, including 3 on a ventilator, and an additional 5 cleared cases in ICU.

6,127,362 vaccine doses have been administered by Victoria's state-commissioned services, with 2,857 administered yesterday at state-run centres.

65.7 per cent of Victorians aged 18 and over have had three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. 94.3 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and over have had two doses.

10,424 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded yesterday. This includes:

  • 6,681 who tested positive on a Rapid Antigen Test
  • 3,743 who returned a positive result on a PCR test.

Sadly, the Department was notified of six deaths yesterday of people aged in their 30s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 100s. Three of today's reported deaths occurred in the past two days and a further two deaths occurred in the past week. One of today's reported deaths occurred in mid-March.

This brings the total number of deaths in Victoria since the pandemic began to 2,749.

There are 61,308 active cases in Victoria.

Yesterday, the 20 millionth PCR test was performed in Victoria since the pandemic began. 22,934 PCR tests were processed yesterday. The total number of PCR tests performed in Victoria since the pandemic began is 20,005,579.

Winter doses

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended a winter dose of COVID-19 vaccine to increase protection for certain groups of people at greatest risk of severe illness from COVID-19. These groups are:

  • adults aged 65 years and older
  • residents of aged care or disability care facilities
  • people aged 16 years and older who are severely immunocompromised
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older.

Eligible people can get their winter dose four or more months after receiving their third COVID-19 vaccination dose. Those who are severely immunocompromised and have had four doses should also have a winter dose four months after their previous dose.

Winter doses are now available from all state-run vaccination centres. Eligible people can book their winter dose via the online vaccination booking portal
