Council has adopted five pledges as part of our Cities Power Partnership (CPP) membership.
Council joined CPP in April 2022 and asked the community about their proposed priorities. Council has adopted five pledges in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, and work together and influence.
Council has pledged to support local community energy projects and encourage investment in community energy, provide incentives for energy efficient development and upgrades to existing buildings, install renewable energy (solar PV and battery storage) on Council buildings, encourage sustainable transport use such as public transport, walking and cycling through Council transport planning and design, and support community facilities to access renewable energy through incentives, support or grants.
Participation in the program requires councils to pledge to achieve five key sustainability actions within six months of joining the partnership.
'Joining the Cities Power Partnership and making these pledges are an important opportunity for us to take strong climate action,' Mayor Kenrick Winchester said.
'Local government has an important role to play in acting on climate change and we are proud to have joined the Cities Power Partnership to work alongside councils across Australia in creating a zero emissions future.'
The Climate Council's Cities Power Partnership is a free national program that supports over 170 councils from all over Australia to accelerate action and promote emissions reduction at the local government level.
Involvement in the program offers Council access to potential grant funding streams and associated application assistance as well as a buddying system with two other councils to learn and share information.
The program also provides a network of community energy groups and local organisations that can help councils to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.
Following adoption and nomination of the pledges, Council will work with the CPP to establish our performance measures and actionable targets for the five pledged actions.
