Swan Hill Rural City Council has adopted the Onsite Wastewater Management Plan (OWMP) 2025-2030, providing a clear framework for managing wastewater from properties not connected to the sewer system.
Council's Mayor, Cr Stuart King, said the OWMP offers guidance for managing both new and existing septic and secondary treatment systems across the municipality.
"The primary aim of the Plan is to minimise risks to public health and the environment by outlining the risk management approaches used by our Environmental Health Officers," he said.
"It also identifies townships experiencing challenges with wastewater disposal, sets priorities for future work, and provides a comprehensive action plan to enhance onsite wastewater management throughout our municipality."
Cr King noted that community consultation played an important role in developing the Plan, with feedback incorporated where appropriate.
"Effective implementation of the OWMP will help prevent the spread of disease and environmental contamination by ensuring wastewater is managed safely and responsibly," he said.
"Council looks forward to progressing the initiatives outlined in the Plan, supporting the health of our community and environment for years to come."
