Townsville City Council has thrown its support behind one of the city's most iconic events, after granting $50,000 towards Stable at Riverway.
Councillors endorsed at October's Ordinary Council Meeting to support the cherished and unique event which will transform Riverway into little Bethlehem for five days in December.
Community and Cultural Development Committee acting chairperson Liam Mooney said the event has been delighting the Townsville community for more than 22 years.
"You know it's almost Christmas in Townsville when Stable on Riverway, formerly Stable on the Strand, comes to town," Cr Mooney said.
"It attracts more than 30,000 people and immerses attendees in the true spirit of the season.
"Stories, song and festivities with musicians and singers, acts, authentic props, and live animals will help to transform Riverway to offer a range of family-friendly activities for everyone of all abilities.
"Stable at Riverway is on from 18 December to 22 December, and one of the many events in the lead up to Christmas.
"Some of the events Council will be holding ahead of the holiday season are Carols By Candlelight, Christmas Together in Our Community and Christmas By The Beach."
The grant for Stable at Riverway was one of eight grants and partnerships proposals adopted at the Ordinary Council Meeting.
Cr Mooney said more than $16,000 was awarded to seven community organisations.
"Grant applications for Red Nose Limited, Townsville and District 4WD Club, Rotary Club of Townsville Saints, Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club, Down Syndrome Queensland, Thuringowa Art Society and Townsville – Thuringowa Pipes and Drums were all adopted," he said.
"Council recognises the vital contribution that community organisations make to the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of Townsville.
"Council is proud to be able to provide grants to support the creation, implementation and delivery of initiatives that align with Council's corporate priorities and demonstrates a positive contribution to improving the wellbeing of the community."
