A major road improvement project kicking off in Swansea on Tuesday 21 April is set to make one of the area's main thoroughfares safer and more accessible for public transport

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the $2 million work to upgrade Lake Road would include a 650m stretch between The Esplanade and Macquarie Street.

Lake Road runs east to west through the heart of the lakeside suburb, connecting the Pacific Highway with the lake foreshore.

"This project is part of a longer-term Council effort to improve safety and traffic flow in Swansea," Mayor Adam said.

"Lake Road provides key access for residents, local businesses and visitors, and it's a popular route for boaties using Swansea boat ramp."

"But ageing infrastructure and its deteriorating surface mean it no longer meets safety or design standards."

The project includes road pavement replacement, drainage works and widening of the Boyd Street and Marks Street intersections to improve access for public transport and enhance overall safety.

Minor pedestrian facilities, along with updated signage and line marking, will also be included.

Minister for the Hunter and Member for Swansea Yasmin Catley said the works were "great news for the community".

"I know the community has long called for these upgrades and I have been working alongside Mayor Shultz to advocate for this funding," she said.

"I want to thank Council for funding these important works and I look forward to continuing to work together to deliver for the people of Swansea."

Mayor Adam said various design options were considered and assessed against criteria including long-term resilience, cost, construction timeframes and project risk.

"The selected approach delivers the best balance of safety improvements and value," he said.

Construction is expected to be completed by August, with traffic management in place throughout the works.

Short periods of restricted driveway access may be required, but affected residents will be contacted directly to maintain access wherever possible.
