Council of Europe Chief to Join Anti-Drug Meeting in Italy

CoE/Secretary General

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, will participate with senior figures in an international meeting on the European Coalition against drugs on addiction prevention and recovery. The event, organised by the governments of Italy and France, will take place on 23 October in the San Patrignano Community, in Coriano in Rimini province in Italy.

The Secretary General will deliver a speech at the introductory session, where he will present the Council of Europe's approach to drug policies from the perspective of law enforcement, addiction prevention, treatment, and social and professional reintegration.

The Council of Europe: fighting against drugs and addiction

During the event, the Secretary General will return to the San Patrignano community, which he first visited in March 2026. The rehabilitation centre provides support and expert guidance to people suffering from drug addiction and marginalisation.

San Patrignano is a key partner in advancing innovative approaches to addiction treatment within the Pompidou Group, the Council of Europe's cooperation group on drugs and addictions.

The Council of Europe has been a member of the European Coalition against drugs since it was launched by Italy and France during a European Political Community summit in Copenhagen in 2025.
