Mildura Rural City Council has reappointed Chief Executive Officer Martin Hawson for a further five-year term, providing continuity of leadership as the organisation continues to deliver major projects, advocate for regional investment and position the municipality for long-term growth.

Growing up in Red Cliffs, Mr Hawson became Council's first locally raised CEO in more than two decades when he was appointed in 2022, following a long career in senior local government leadership.

Since then, Council has delivered and progressed several of the region's most significant transformational initiatives, including the continued implementation of the Mildura Future Ready advocacy strategy, which helped secure more than $40 million in government investment for major regional projects.

This included the development of the Mildura Sporting Precinct, completion of major stages of the Mildura Riverfront Redevelopment and the redevelopment of Powerhouse Place. There has also been major investment in early years infrastructure through projects such as the Red Cliffs Early Years Hub and the development of the Nichols Point Early Years Hub, ensuring the municipality is well placed to accommodate continued residential expansion in coming decades.

Mildura Mayor Ali Cupper said Council was delighted to retain a leader with a proven track record of delivering outcomes for the community.

"I've known Martin and worked alongside him for many years, and what has always stood out is his unwavering commitment to our community," Cr Cupper said.

"The results speak for themselves. During his leadership, we've seen transformative projects delivered, some real success in attracting external funding, and a Council that has become a respected and influential voice with all levels of government.

"Martin has genuine runs on the board. He's helped shape projects that will benefit our community for decades to come, and our municipality is fortunate to have someone of his calibre, experience and passion at the helm."

Mr Hawson said he was honoured by Council's confidence in him and remained as motivated as ever to serve the community he has proudly called home his entire life.

"Being entrusted with this role is a privilege I never take for granted," Mr Hawson said.

"This is my community, it's where I was raised, where my family lives and where I've built my career, so I'm incredibly passionate about helping our region reach its full potential.

"Over the past five years we've delivered some significant outcomes together, but I genuinely believe the opportunities ahead of us are even greater."

But Mr Hawson said there were also significant challenges ahead.

"Like councils across Australia, we're operating in an environment of rising costs, increasing community expectations and growing pressure on local government finances," he said.

"Financial sustainability will be one of the biggest challenges we face over the next decade. Our responsibility is to ensure we're making disciplined decisions, delivering value for ratepayers and investing in the infrastructure our communities need, while maintaining a financially responsible organisation.

"I believe we're well placed to meet these challenges. We have a clear vision, talented people, strong community support and a track record of turning big ideas into tangible outcomes.

"My priority over the next five years is to continue building a high-calibre team with the skills, leadership and culture required to deliver exceptional outcomes for our community."
