Phil Gillespie becomes ninth Victorian umpire to officiate Men's ODI cricket

Cricket Victoria congratulates Phil Gillespie on becoming the ninth Victorian umpire to stand in a Men's One Day International, making his debut in the match between New Zealand and India at Eden Park in Auckland.

As a member of the CV Umpires Panel, the Cricket Australia Contracted Umpire Panel and the International Cricket Council's International Panel of Umpires, Phil has continued to establish himself as one of Australia's leading match officials through more than a decade of consistent performances at every level.

First appointed to Cricket Victoria's umpire panel in 2009-10, Phil progressed through the Victorian and Australian umpiring pathway system before joining Cricket Australia's contracted umpire list ahead of the 2014-15 season. He made his Women's One Day International debut later that season and has since stood in 17 Women's ODI matches. In 2018, he made his Women's T20 International debut and has officiated in 10 Women's T20 Internationals.

In 2021, he achieved another career milestone when he umpired his first Women's Test Match, the historic day-night Test between Australia and India at Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Appointed to the ICC International Panel of Umpires ahead of the 2022-23 season, Phil later made his Men's T20 International debut during Australia's series against the West Indies at the Gabba.

Since joining the ICC International Panel, he has officiated across a range of international tournaments and ICC pathway events around the world. Appointments have taken him to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Oman and Japan, where he has stood in 35 Men's T20 Internationals.

In 2024, he was selected by the ICC to officiate at the ICC Under 19 Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa. Phil is currently in New Zealand, where he has already stood in two matches during the ongoing five-match T20 International series between New Zealand and India. Back home, Phil has officiated in 122 Victorian Premier Cricket matches, including six Men's First XI Grand Finals.

CV's State Umpire Performance Coach Geoff Joshua paid tribute to Gillespie's appointment.

"This is a significant and thoroughly deserved achievement by Phil, earned through sustained excellence over many years," he said.

"He has consistently demonstrated the professionalism, resilience and decision-making ability required to succeed at the highest levels of officiating. To see Phil appointed to a Men's ODI between two of the world's leading cricket nations is a proud moment for him, his family, Cricket Victoria and Australian cricket officiating more broadly."

"Throughout his umpiring journey, Phil has remained committed to giving back to the game. He has made a significant and lasting contribution to the support and development of Victorian umpires throughout his career."

"Phil was instrumental in the establishment of the Alan McCarthy Scholarship and has generously shared his experience through mentoring, Premier Cricket umpiring, facilitator roles at Cricket Australia's High Performance Umpiring Accreditation workshops, and as a respected role model within the Victorian and Australian umpiring community."

Phil Gillespie becomes just the 48th Australian umpire, and ninth Victorian, to stand in a Men's One Day International since the first ODI was played between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 5 January 1971.
