Port Macquarie Hastings Council has received national recognition for its commitment to supporting veterans into meaningful employment, taking out the Best Regional Veteran Employment Initiative award at the 2026 Prime Minister's National Veteran Employment Awards.

The prestigious award recognises the positive impact of Council's Veterans Employment Program, which supports former Australian Defence Force personnel to transition into civilian careers.

General Manager Robert Fish welcomed the award, describing it as an outstanding achievement for Council and a reflection of its commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace.

"Veterans bring an incredible range of skills, experience and qualities to the workforce, and we're proud to recognise the value they can bring to our organisation and our community," Mr Fish said.

"We pride ourselves on recognising the importance of providing opportunities to support veterans in taking that next step in their careers.

"This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the work being undertaken by our organisation to create those opportunities and ensure veterans feel welcomed, supported and valued."

Developed in collaboration with the NSW Office of Veterans Affairs, our Veterans Employment program:

  • Provides advice and guidance to both veterans and employing managers about matching skill sets

  • Raises awareness of local government careers

  • Supports veterans transitioning to civilian employment

  • Promotes the value of veteran skills and experience

  • Supports employees who continue to serve

Council is proud to be recognised by the Department of Veteran's Affairs (DVA) as a Veteran Friendly Employer.

This recognition reflects our commitment to being a veteran inclusive recruitment, workplace support, leadership, and a culture that values the unique skills and experiences veterans bring to our workforce.
