The Greater Geelong Council has resolved to write to the state government about traffic noise levels in The Heights Estate, Fyansford from the Geelong Ring Road.
Residents have raised ongoing concerns about excessive traffic noise in the estate, which they report is affecting the area's liveability and atmosphere.
Council received a petition signed by 220 residents in December last year, calling for the existing noise wall on the major arterial above the estate to be extended.
In 2018, developers were assessed as having met their planning permit conditions relating to noise level controls by VicRoads (now Regional Roads Victoria (RRV)). It's unclear if further assessments have been carried out by the developer or RRV.
The City wrote to RRV in January 2020 requesting steps be taken to put measures in place to alleviate traffic noise.
Council's letter to the state will ask for a fresh assessment of noise levels for The Heights Estate and that mitigation measures be put in place if they're beyond the acceptable limit.
Council will also seek confirmation that an assessment of traffic noise levels for the estate was carried out in accordance with the planning permit conditions.
Last night's resolution was as a result of a Notice of Motion from Councillor Eddy Kontelj.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher said the Council group had listened to the community's concerns.
The Council group thanks residents at The Heights Estate for bringing their concerns to us.
We fully understand that loud traffic noise is causing distress and the situation needs to be investigated further.
Cr Kontelj said more needs to be done to alleviate the community's concerns.
I've met with residents from The Heights Estate who've described the issues they're facing.
My fellow councillors and I are concerned by the situation and we hope extra steps can be taken by Regional Roads Victoria to reduce vehicle noise levels.
