Council Says No Grand Parade Clearways: Bayside

Bayside Council does not support the NSW Government's proposed changes to the Grand Parade and, following the Council Meeting on Wednesday 26 October, will make a comprehensive submission rejecting the proposal.

Bayside Mayor Dr Christina Curry also used a Mayoral Minute to highlight the negative aspects of the current proposal.

"Transport for NSW has proposed changes to The Grand Parade that will see our beautiful foreshore turned into a motorway for residents travelling from southern Sydney," Mayor Curry said.

"Brighton Le Sands is a popular place for our community to enjoy the beach and to dine out. It is important that Council reflects the views of our community and that Transport for NSW hears our serious concerns before a final decision is made.

"The proposed changes will have a negative impact on residents, businesses, and visitors to our area."

Council recognises that The Grand Parade is a significant arterial road in Sydney's State classified road network.

However, extending the clearways will reduce the amount of on-street parking available along the route, and the compensatory parking works will not make up for the loss.

Businesses will be impacted by the proposed changes to parking availability and several well used loading zones will be lost.

Council is also concerned that extending the clearways could potentially allow traffic speeds to increase, making the area less safe for pedestrians and cyclists.
