Federation Council is pleased to announce it has secured $234,500 in grant funding through the Transport for New South Wales Get Kids Active 2025-26 Program. This significant funding will be used to construct new footpaths in both Corowa and Howlong, enhancing community connectivity and promoting safe, active travel.
The successful grant application covers two key infrastructure projects that align with the program's goal to improve safe walking and riding options for travel, including to and from school.
The two projects receiving funding are:
Howlong: Construction of 270 metres of concrete path on the south side of Hawkins Street from Townsend Street to Read Street, with a funding amount of $116,200.
Corowa: Construction of a 220-metre, 2-metre wide concrete footpath on John Street between Mary Street and Wanstead Street, with a funding amount of $118,300.
Federation Council will also contribute $40,275 to the projects, funded from the Footpath Renewal Program, demonstrating a commitment to improving local infrastructure. The grant funds must be fully expended by June 30, 2027.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook, said the grant is a major win for the communities of Corowa and Howlong.
"This is a fantastic outcome that reflects our commitment to enhancing the lives of our community through better infrastructure," Mayor Cook said.
"These new footpaths are more than just concrete; they are vital links that will enable more people, especially our children, to comfortably walk and ride as part of their everyday travel, making the journey to school and other destinations much safer."
Cr Cook highlighted the importance of actively working to deliver on the community's vision.
"These footpaths were identified in our Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan, so securing this funding is a direct result of putting our strategic planning into action," Mayor Cook said.
" I want to congratulate the staff involved in the grant application process and thank Transport for New South Wales for their support. I look forward to seeing these projects get underway."
Council is required to adhere to the funding agreement and will now adjust the 2025/2026 Capital works budget to reflect the new income and expenditure. The community will be advised of the works before construction begins and will receive updates throughout the project.
